GLOW Lyric Theatre’s Summer/Main Stage performances take place at The Greenville Fine Arts Center, in their intimate blackbox space in Greenville, SC. The Greenville Fine Arts Center is located at 102 Pine Knoll Drive Greenville SC 29609.

Parking is located in front and back of the building. GLOW’s box office and will call desk are located just within the space’s entrance.

We closed our lucky 13th season tonight with a final performance of "Black Broadway," and we could be feeling happier that we got to share these amazing shows with all of you. Glow Lyric Theatre wouldn't exist without your support and your patronage!

THE MAKING OF BLACK BROADWAY

As we head into our final performances of all three shows, we round out our "Making Of" series with "The Making of Black Broadway," which explores the joys and trials of devising this very special piece of art. Director Jenise Cook and performers Aurora Renee, Gabriel Yarborough, and Rylee-Michelle Droege joined us to talk about their favorite moments and funny stories, as well as what this show and the process means to them.

"This production of The Handmaid’s Tale is directed by Glow’s artistic director Jenna Tamisiea Elser. Elser did an exceptional job with complex material. Her staging makes good use of the space and its levels. In many opera productions, the acting can often take a back seat to the music. Elser has ensured this is not such a production and has coached significant acting performances out of her singers. She has also found the much-needed variations in the tone of the story and has teased out the appropriate energies accordingly. . ."

"Katherine Fili leads the company as Offred. Fili delivers an extraordinary performance of the tormented heroine. Her voice moves effortlessly through Ruders’ jarring score with a clear tone and intention. Offred is a part that could easily be overplayed but Fili approaches her character with perfect balance. She transports us into the experience of Offred and offers the audience heartbreak without overwhelming us. . ."

"The Handmaid’s Tale is far from “feel-good” theatrical entertainment. It’s not even cathartic as are many operas and musical dramas. It’s pain. It’s brutality. And it’s scary because it could actually happen. There are moments in today’s world, where we don’t seem too far off from what’s depicted in this opera. That’s why Glow decided to produce it. They always choose their shows with an eye toward real-world events. The Handmaid’s Tale is not pleasant and it’s not for everyone. There will be those who won’t be open to this encounter and that’s okay. But if you are, you’ll see and hear something like you’ve never seen and heard before."
